Joey Aiuppa was a notorious mobster and crime boss who was involved in organized crime activities in Chicago during the mid-20th century. He was born on July 10, 1907, in Melrose Park, Illinois, and rose through the ranks of the Chicago Outfit, a powerful criminal organization led by Al Capone.
Aiuppa eventually became the boss of the Chicago Outfit in the late 1970s, following the death of his predecessor, Sam Giancana. He was known for being a ruthless and cunning leader who maintained control over the criminal activities of the outfit, including gambling, loan-sharking, extortion, and drug trafficking.
Throughout his criminal career, Aiuppa was implicated in various illegal activities, but he managed to evade prosecution for many years. However, in 1986, he was finally convicted of conspiracy in the Operation GAMBAT sting operation, which targeted the Chicago Outfit's control of the Las Vegas casino industry.
Aiuppa was sentenced to 28 years in prison and died on February 22, 1997, while still incarcerated. He was one of the most powerful and feared mob bosses in Chicago history and was known by the nickname "Joey O'Brien" within the criminal underworld.
